Session 6: Luke Chapters 11-12 Teachings and Warnings (Part 1)

Session 6: Luke Chapters 11-12 Teachings and Warnings

This 12-session study looks at the heart of Jesus for all people, as seen in the book of Luke. It is in Luke’s gospel that we see the breadth of Jesus’ ministry to reach all people, to bring all into his arms and show them his heart for them personally. Since Christ and the Father are one (John 10:30), Luke provides the opportunity to see for ourselves how God interacts with his beloved, how he showers his beloved with goodness and mercy all of our days (Ps 23:6). And the good news is that you are his beloved! He delights in you (Zeph 3:17)!

This post is the first part of session six of the study, with each session opening with warm-up introductory questions, going on to a reading from Luke and questions related to the passage. Then the study goes to the comparative or referenced Old Testament passages found in the assigned reading with accompanying questions. Each study session ends with considerations for personal application. The study is appropriate for individual or small group application. Feel free to share the response to an application question or just comment on the study itself below.

Introduction

How satisfied are you with your prayer life on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high)? Is there something you feel is missing or is it just right in this season?

Consider these topics that Jesus teaches on in this session: worry, greed, peace, whispers, abundance, bloodshed, selfishness, forgiveness, patience. What is their prevalence in society today?

These chapters share a number of teachings and ‘woes’ of Jesus. He taught to the people of the day as well as his own disciples during this time. It is a lesson for us that his disciples questioned the relevance of such teachings and were told that they were included in the instruction. Yet Jesus not only instructs us, but also encourages us and explains our rewards for obedience.

Read Luke Chapters 11 and 12.

Questions

The Lord’s Prayer is sometimes called a collective prayer. What examples of collectivity are in the prayer (11:2-4)? How does this influence its reading?

Luke 11:8 (NIV) speaks of ‘shameless audacity’ of prayers. Define this phrase and give examples.

What division does Luke 11:28 cause? Who does the dividing and the unifying?

Generalize each of the seven woes that Jesus declared to the Pharisees. Be sure to include the one in Luke 11:39-41, even though it does not say ‘woe’. Note also what antidotes Jesus gave for some of the woes.

What does Jesus say of the life and body in Luke 12:22-31. What encouragement is found in verses 30-34?

How is watchfulness related to obedience and patience (12:35-48)? What are the rewards for obedience in watchfulness?

Chapter 12 both opens and closes with teachings on hypocrisy, first to the Pharisees then to the people. Summarize the examples given. Which sin might be associated with each of the examples?
