Why Christ Came: to set prisoners free

He came to set prisoners free.

Why did Jesus come?

‘He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners;’ Jesus says in Luke 4:18. How easy it is to think only of those behind bars. But the truth of the matter is that all of us are imprisoned by something. Whatever we struggle against is our own prison. What has enslaved us? Is it constant dieting? Is it retail therapy that has taken over us? Is it addiction? Is it indifference? Is it self-importance? Is it that we can’t put our phones down for five consecutive minutes? Is it the drive to always be busy, mindless action or recreation? Is it fear? Is it a sense of inadequacy? Is it a sense of not being enough? Is it a drive for success? What has enslaved us?

I think if we are honest with ourselves there will be something or even many things that keep us from living fully and freely in Him. He came that we may shed this mantle, shed this weight, shed this prison. Whatever has monopolized our time, our mind, our thoughts, He came that we might give it to Him. He can handle it. He strong enough, good enough, kind enough. I choose to hand it over and live in freedom.

He came to liberate us; that’s why Christ came.

Merry Christmas!
